Murano – Venice Island hopping 1
Murano, Italy

Murano, Italy

The first port of call for our island hop day was Murano which is known for being the hub of Venetian glass blowing expertise. The ferry bus ride out there was very pleasant and took about 10 minutes inclusive of stops.

It looks like a mini Venice, with canals of course and a few streets inbetween. You could probably walk across the island in half an hour.

Needless to say, there were lots of shops with glass works from the exquisite to the tacky and most of it very expensive. A simple lamp shade costs about $360 NZ and we didn’t even venture into some of the more beautiful shops as we can’t convert things with that many zero’s so easily!

We tested their gelato, which was not as good as the mainland, then tested the Pizza by the slice and coffee so we could get a free toilet stop (1.5 euro a pee in the lagoon towns) of which the pizza was great and then caught our connection to the next island of Burano.

On reflection unless you are very keen on glass art works, glass blowing or investing in a piece direct from the workshop then we would give the island a miss.
