Dodging showers in Split
Split, Croatia |
Split, Croatia
We are beginning to doubt that the weather is so lovely in Croatia, the rain continued till lunch time so we enjoyed a good sleep in and leisurely start with a little more house work of washing, and a chat on a poor connection to Lils. As soon as it cleared we were off like a shot to grab some supplies we had run out of, and look around.
The green markets are down near the port and quite big. We managed to find a cevapi stand who also did a delicious fresh salad for $2 to which we added some nice sheep cheese purchased from another vendor. They have a pale yellow green capsicum here which is very crisp, sweet, and delicate (and included in our salad) The olive oil is also very pleasant here, being smooth and less peppery than Italain types. As with all places if you are lucky to find a good local eatery you can eat well and cheaply. We were nicely full of fresh delicious food for NZD6.00.
They also have clothes, crafts etc at the green markets and I did manage to bag a bargain with some red coral earrings for 6 NZD vs 30 in Dubrovnik 🙂
In wandering around and browsing there is not a lot to do here that is of interest to us(other than our trip yesterday), and our impressions of Split are that its possibly not worth the visit unless you are on a boat hop in summer around the islands on the coast. We would have liked to do a trip to the islands off shore and the blue cave but the weather has squashed those plans. These things happen though!
For dinner we tried to get into a place recommended by our hostess but it was packed out, so we went to one inside the walls which had a 2012 Tripadvisor recommended sign which appeared full but we managed to get one little outside table. Long story short it was our most expensive meal in Croatia and the worst of our holiday so far. Overcooked fish, disgusting sauce, plain meat and the worst vegetable that was cabbage in a former life, that all but a hungry pig would reject. I was really disappointed mainly as they were charging high amounts for rubbish so I did a first on this holiday and sought out the maître de and complained.
Those that know me may be smiling, I was very polite but did not hold back on my disappointment and opinion of the chefs work, in great detail! They were very apologetic and insisted I take a bottle of their best wine away as a token. I would rather have had table service that asked how the meal was going at the time as I could have sent the food back, but really we have eaten very well so far its not bad odds in the big picture. I shall report on the wine later when we have sampled it!
After note: The wine was very good 🙂
