Figueras, Spain

It was great to have the luxury of popping downstairs for a buffet breakfast which was included in our room rate. Nice coffee, potato tortilla which is a staple over here, Jamon croquettes, churros and selection of meats, cheeses, lovely spreads and breads, cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. I was even able to practice moderation – not sure why, must have been feeling sleepy or something!

Our days travels started with a bus trip over the high winding hill to Figueres where the Dali museum is. The trip takes an hour and is quite entertaining at times because in places only one vehicle at a time can make it around a corner. The system seems to work, but Vernon said there are only mm separating the passes sometimes eek.

The town of Figueres is described on Trip Advisor as nothing great except for the Dali museum, but we found it very charming and a lot more authentic and tidy then Barcelona. There is even a big ‘Yoghurt Museum’ there and whilst we did not go in we did sample a tub of Catalan yoghurt which was very nice – complete with big fresh blueberries and raspberries.

There was a bit of a line for the museum, but it moved along steadily so we only had a 20 minute wait to get in. Inside it was pretty jam packed and I think the Picasso style of limited numbers makes for a more pleasant experience.

Regarding the museum and the art, it was really enjoyable. I took loads of pics and marvelled at Dali’s extensive talent. Some of his work is a bit out there but both Vern and I could get it more than Picasso’s modern works! We listened in to a guide talking to some American clients and it was fascinating. I do wish I was more knowledgable on art and history – but we are learning as we go. The way the painting was described it all made perfect sense, and rather than thinking he was a bit over the top, I couldn’t help but think how clever he was. The romantic in me also likes how devoted he was to his wife – who appears in most works often in a hidden or subtle way. Dali also fashioned jewellery which was bling-a-licious. One piece was a heart which has rubies in the centre which move in and out as if beating!

Back in town we we satisfied our hunger with a simple lunch of nice empanada of ham and cheese – Spanish pie – the pastry very thin and delicious, cheesecake and good coffee. When we got back to Cadeques we stopped by the supermarket for a picnic tea of huge mixed salad, Jamon, curd cheese, pate, aioli, hand crafted wood fired bread rolls and anchovies. Added to that some gigantic oranges and a 1.25l bottle of a red drink similar to Sangria which is popular here (4% alc) which only cost €1.28 euro!!!!! Saw red wine starting at €1.50 for a full sized bottle which is cheaper than water? The total cost of our healthy, tasty dinner was €12 euros;the fantastic view from our balcony was free πŸ™‚
